Subject: [gfs2] d_doio stuck in readv waiting for pagelock
Message-id: 1212151775.32702.23.camel@technetium.msp.redhat.com
O-Subject: [RHEL5.3 PATCH][GFS2] bz 432057: GFS2: d_doio stuck in readv() waiting for pagelock.
Bugzilla: 432057
RH-Acked-by: Steven Whitehouse <swhiteho@redhat.com>

Hi,

This is a replacement patch for the one I NACKed earlier.
We've identified and fixed the problems discovered during
testing and this revised patch includes that fix.

In addition to the tests mentioned below, this test has
also been run in overnight QE "brawl" tests and overnight
d_io tests, all successful (until my hardware died!).

Regards,

Bob Peterson

Original comment:

Hi,

This patch fixes two long-standing and complex bugzilla records
against GFS2:

bz 432057: GFS2: d_doio stuck in readv() waiting for pagelock.
bz 428751: GFS2 is not cluster coherent

This patch is a RHEL5 port of two upstream patches done to the nmw
git tree for GFS2 by Steve Whitehouse. More detailed explanations of
the two patches may be found here:

https://www.redhat.com/archives/cluster-devel/2008-May/msg00173.html
https://www.redhat.com/archives/cluster-devel/2008-May/msg00174.html

and, of course, the bugzilla records themselves.

This code has undergone extensive testing, both upstream and in RHEL.
In upstream, it was tested with postmark and some sanity tests.
In RHEL, it was tested on the exxon cluster, the smoke cluster, the
roth cluster and system "kool". Tests I've done include:

(1) Hell 1 - Hell 7
(2) Cluster QE's "d_io" REG test
(3) Aol's benchp13 test
(4) Cluster QE's dd_io (Distributed d_io)

I'm planning to do more testing and the cluster QE department is in
the process of doing more tests on it as well. There are three known
additional problems we've identified during testing: one in GFS2,
one in GFS2's lock module interface, and one in DLM. These problems
cause dd_io to periodically fail when several nodes in a cluster are
contending for the same locks on the same files. For the additional
GFS2 bugs we've opened two new bugzilla records: 447747 and 447748.
Bug 447747 still needs solving. We have a fix for 447748 which
we've also tested fairly well. For the dlm problem, there is a known
fix that's gone upstream and has been tested and it will be included
in the kernel for RHEL 5.3.

Bob Peterson
