<h1>Installing <span class='wikiword'>FreeGuide</span> on Ubuntu</h1>
<h3>Get Java</h3>
<p>On Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 and later, make sure the "universe" repository is enabled, and then install the <span class='wikiword'>OpenJDK</span> version of Java by opening a terminal and typing:
</p>
<p class='vspace'><code class='escaped'>sudo apt-get install openjdk-6-jre</code>
</p>
<p class='vspace'>On older Ubuntu versions, make sure the "multiverse" repository is enabled, and then install the Sun version of Java by opening a terminal and typing:
</p>
<p class='vspace'><code class='escaped'>sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre</code>
</p>
<div class='vspace'></div><h3>Get XMLTV</h3>
<p>You can get the latest version of XMLTV by typing (in a terminal):
</p>
<p class='vspace'><code class='escaped'>sudo apt-get install xmltv</code>
</p>
<p class='vspace'>The xmltv package is in the "universe" repository, so ensure that it is enabled.

<div class='vspace'></div><h3>Get <span class='wikiword'>FreeGuide</span></h3>
<p>In recent versions of Ubuntu (since Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10), freeguide is in the "multiverse" repository*, so enable that and type:
</p>
<p class='vspace'><code class='escaped'>sudo apt-get install freeguide</code>
</p>
<div class='vspace'></div><div class='indent'><em>(If you are using an earlier Ubuntu version, you can download and install the <span class='wikiword'>FreeGuide</span> package from <a class='urllink' href='http://packages.ubuntu.com/feisty/misc/freeguide' rel='nofollow'>http://packages.ubuntu.com/feisty/misc/freeguide</a>. This is a Feisty package, but it should work on any version of Ubuntu (it certainly works on Dapper and Edgy).)</em>
</div><p class='vspace'>You can now run <span class='wikiword'>FreeGuide</span> by choosing it from the menu (under "Sound and Video") or alternatively by typing into a terminal:

</p>
<p class='vspace'>You'll now need to answer a few questions, and then you're ready to go.
</p>
<p class='vspace'>If you use a proxy server (if you don't know, you probably don't), you'll need to read this page: <a class='wikilink' href='../Main/ConfigureProxyOnLinux.html'>Configure Proxy On Linux</a>.

It is in the multiverse repository because it used to require the Sun version of Java. Hopefully it will soon be moved to universe, now that there is a Free Software version of Java (<span class='wikiword'>OpenJDK</span>) which can run <span class='wikiword'>FreeGuide</span>.</em>
</div><div class='vspace'></div><h3>Get the very latest</h3>
<p>If you'd like to download the very latest version of <span class='wikiword'>FreeGuide</span> instead of using the one packaged by your distribution (not recommended), you can download various packages from the <a class='urllink' href='http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=35309&package_id=27789' rel='nofollow'>sourceforge download page</a>.
