Basic Concepts</A>
</H1>
It is important to understand the basic properties of the data which
are being reduced since most computational techniques make implicit
assumptions.
The result of an algorithm may depend on things such as sampling and noise
characteristics of the data set.
Furthermore, the most common methods for estimation of parameters are discussed in this section.
